I met Barbara (and Bob) for the first time when I joined NU as a research scholar some 14 years ago. They had volunteered to host international scholars on some website and I stayed with them for 4 days (I remember Bob patiently helping me reverse-park UHaul trailer in the back alley that took way too long). She shared her excitement about teaching science in school, showed her toys models of DNAs, and her experience from Peace Corps. We developed friendship and they even invited us to Janes family dinners on holidays (Bob even tried to teach me sailing once!). Janes family and my wife were there and Greg and I ran Chicago marathon. But then, we moved to NY and came back and in that process kind of lost touch with them. However, Barbara did bless our newborn son 3 years before her demise. I stumbled upon this news accidentally, very late, and this is so heartbreaking. Bob and Barbara were very special and rare people. They will stay in heart and personal stories forever. -Vinod, Pratibha, Pratap

Mrs. Janes was my 8th grade science teacher. I'll never forget the sludge test. I know some said she was a hard teacher to have and while that was mainly true, she was one of those teachers for me that I grew to appreciate her rigor in the later years. When I went off to UBC and pursued a science degree there were so many times in labs where I had flashbacks to our classes together. Mainly the importance of not getting calculations wrong and having non contaminated instruments. Last thing I expected in 8th grade was an explosion but very real possibility at college. She set me up to be very diligent and treat chemistry w respect. We also all had to do a biography report on a famous scientist and I got Aristotle. Everyone got someone and we'd periodically have to report on that person during the year. What a clever way to teach the whole class about the history of science. It also led me to be more inquisitive and I wound up really getting fascinated by Sir Isaac Newton. I'll always appreciate Mrs. Janes and the impact she had on my life.

Barbara was an inspiration to all who knew her. As an inexperienced teacher, I was amazed at her intelligence, honesty, and guidance. I will never forget a poster she had on her wall(along with photos of dozens of her previous students) that read "standing on the shoulders of giants." She and many other teachers at Glencoe Central embodied the spirit that John F. Kennedy espoused of self sacrifice for the common good, a higher calling. She rode her bicycle to school every day, rain or shine, and was dedicated to the learning community in Glencoe. Her many students over the years benefitted from her spirit and energy for Science and knowledge, and she encouraged girls to consider careers in science and technology. The world is just a shade less bright with her passing. She will be sorely missed. Fondly Mark Barry

We at Nature's Perspective landscaping have helped Barbara with landscape activities for many the past 20 years. Last year she allowed us to mow the lawn weekly. Sometimes she got behind on activities and would ask us to help her get back to where she could manage it once again... by herself.. She always enjoyed the exercise, as it was good for maintaining her health. .She was a great activist and was passionate about life and Evanston . She will be missed !

My husband Benny and I were shocked by news of Barbara Janes' passing when it arrived almost simultaneously from a friend who served with us in the the first Pakistan Peace Corps group (Pak I) in 1961 and from a fellow board member of Friends of Pakistan USA. Taffy was a friend of our youth and a pillar of both groups. We had not seen her since the 55th anniversary of the Peace Corps in Washington, DC, five years ago, but we always remembered her as an extraordinarily energetic and determined woman. We remember her also as an indefatigable hiking companion in the Colorado Rockies and the Olympic Cascades at Pak I group reunions - plus the high Andes of Peru, where she joined us for an unforgettable trip in 2005. She could usually out-pace us. Of course we worked together closely in founding Friends of Pakistan USA in 2006. Her dedication to education in Pakistan never flagged, and she brought the first girls education project to FOPUSA continuing to shape our work ever since. Her death is a loss to this cause, but of course it is most keenly felt by her family and friends, Our hearts go out to her family, especially to her daughter Trina who followed her into the Peace Corps. May her legacy go on.

This is a bummer to see so much later. Barbara was my mentor teacher at IIT as I student taught. She was the best. We formed a strong bond and I would visit frequently for dinners and dog sat while she traveled. We were an odd couple, basically opposites in many ways but the exact same. We just took very different paths but Barbara saw something in me that most did not. She did so much to shape my adult life. She gave me opportunity and hope. Things I will be eternally grateful for.

Whenever I saw Barbara at a City meeting, I thought to myself "Now this could get interesting!" She was such a tremenous advocate for forward-thinking in the world and she will be missed on many levels!

I remember first meeting Barbara at the Evanston Council of PTA Presidents. She was an active member and always added to the meetings. We both had children who were the same ages and our children were friends. I remember once we were at a party at the Tisdahl's Lake Geneva and Barbara and some others swam across the lake and back. I was very impressed. she will be missed. Barbara will live on in the memories of those who knew her. To Trina, James and your families please accept my deepest condolences.
