Some 11 years ago REI opened their store along the Platte River in downtown Denver. The store included an information desk called ORIC (Outdoor Recreation Information Center). Bernie and I were the first volunteers. Always faithful, Burnie gave of his time at the desk every week for the better part of ten years. He never met a person he didn't know! Strongly opinionated? Yes, but he knew Colorado and visitors asking for information got it from Bernie, and more. He also volunteered as a docent at the Bradford Washburn Mountairneering Museum in the American Mountaineering Center, Golden. Again he gave generously of his time and knowledge. Whether he was in Denver or Golden, or Loveland Ski area or with his grandson counting climbers going up the trail on Bierstadt, this guy from NYC really loved Colorado and its recreational environment.
