Mike was my friend for several decades, and I regarded him as my best friend. That doesn't mean that we always were in touch with each other; but, through that length of time, we had many conversations and shared experiences. Mike was one of the most intelligent and well-read people that I have known. And, without a doubt, he was a valuably hip observer of how we lead our ordinary lives, our daily culture. I like to think of Mike as, in many ways, a mentor and a sentinel for me. And he approached the world that he observed with compassion, delight and humor.
