Obituary of Marvin L. Stone

Marvin Stone passed away Thursday, April 23, 2015. A Denver native, Marvin Stone loved life and made the most of his 93+ years. In addition to a distinguished career in accounting, he was known for his love of travel, great sense of humor and generosity of spirit. Marvin was born to Morris and Ruth Stone in 1921. He went to East High School followed by the University of Denver. While Marvin was still a junior at University of Denver, Pearl Harbor was attacked. Pressed by the imminence of military duty, he received special permission to take the CPA exam. He not only passed the exam in 1942 having just turned 21, but two months later he received a letter stating he had achieved the highest grade in the country. Marvin began his accounting practice as a sole practitioner in 1946 when the Navy released him from active duty. In 1948 Gerald Gray joined Marvin and within a few years they formed Stone, Gray and Company. Marvin's achievements in the accounting profession are legendary, culminating with the industry's top honor when he was asked in 1967 to serve as President of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. A devoted family man, Marvin is survived by his beloved companion of eighteen years, Susy Grazi, his daughters Kathryn Stone and Robyn (Per) Hedly, and brother Raymond (Louise) Stone. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years Marian Stone and sister Betty Hillman Corwin. A memorial service will take place Sunday, 12:00 noon, at Feldman Mortuary, 1673 York. Contributions may be made to The Denver Hospice or a charity of choice.
